![]() I refer to Soulver most frequently for units. (You can also put in comments for that purpose, but since this isn’t a review, I won’t explore Soulver’s features exhaustively.) I focus here on the OS X version, which has more features than the iOS release the mobile version lacks stock tickers, for instance. And when you return to it later, you don’t have to sift out its meaning. Rather, Soulver has a lot of built-in terms, units, and other options that let you type something that resembles an incomplete phrase, but makes sense when read aloud. Such tools try to extract meaning from what you type and give you what they think you need. Soulver isn’t a true natural-language system. To moving among different units, finding conversion units, and performing currency calculations, Soulver is my first choice. I use PCalc when I need to tabulate numbers with a keypad or perform calculations. While I love James Thomson’s PCalc and own it on all platforms (including tvOS), PCalc is a calculator, not an interpreter (see “ PCalc 4,” 10 April 2014, and “ Apps that Reveal the Apple TV’s Potential,” 9 November 2015). Soulver for X in Both Mac and iOS - I discovered Soulver via a colleague years ago, when it was a less sophisticated program, and other options were slim. (Try typing “16 mm” or “$1.25” into Spotlight and see what it says.) ![]() This article is an introduction to these four options for those who haven’t discovered them yet, though Google and Spotlight lend themselves to happening across results accidentally. Along the way, Google, Wolfram Alpha, and even Spotlight in OS X 10.11 El Capitan have improved so much in parsing and anticipating what I want, that between those four resources, all my math bases appear covered. I’ve been using the Soulver app for Mac ( $11.99) and iOS ( $2.99) for years now, and have fallen so far under its spell of allowing me to perform calculations using natural language that I often forget how to do them the old-fashioned way. How many minutes will it take to transfer one terabyte at 10 megabits per second? If Voyager 1 is 16,381,324,013 kilometers away from the sun, how many astronomical units (AU) is that? How much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if it could chuck at a rate of 10 units of wood per second for a week? (13,333 minutes 109.5 AU 6,048,000 wood units.) If only I could remember the details!Īdd to that the routine conversions I need to perform constantly. I never made it through calculus in college - though I suspect the decades of writing code since and general mental maturity would let me grasp it now - but there’s plenty from algebra, geometry, and trigonometry I could still put to use. I used to love math and math used to love me.

Several of its most pivotal scenes were filmed on a former naval base due to the city's lack of sound stages, including a recreation of the Empire State Building's observation deck when the New York skyscraper was not available. The film was shot mostly in Seattle during the summer of 1992. Although both Hanks and Ryan had been favored for the lead roles from the beginning, several other actors expressed interest in both parts, while Hanks often disagreed with Ephron over his character's material. The first week of the battle almost ended in disaster.Ĭeremony at the Douaumont ossuary under construction, 1927. We cannot say that the French were surprised, but they were not prepared. He took the necessary precautions at the last minute. He was not aware of how dramatically unprepared the Verdun front was and his artillery was quantitatively and qualitatively greatly inferior to that of Falkenhayn. Joffre, who believed the major battles would take place on a broad front could not imagine that the Germans would engage massively into this deep ravine terrain and only realised the danger at a very late stage. The offensive was decided on in December and quickly put together: it was ready on 12 February but bad weather put it back to the 21st. This tactic focused all fire on a relatively narrow but deep zone to get the most intense shelling and prevent the arrival of reinforcements. In fact, the German attack was not a headlong rush forward, the infantry were confident if they met resistance, the order was to wait for another bombing. He was counting on his heavy artillery which was much more powerful than that of the French, to crush French positions to such an extent that they would no longer be able to defend them. This choice was also a tactic intended to save his troops. So Falkenhayn initially decided to only attack on the right bank and not on both banks as requested by the Chief of Staff of the attacking army. As well as that, the French would have great difficulty fighting on the right bank because the Meuse was a major cut-off point on which there were less than a dozen bridges. There remained a slow narrow-gauge train and a rocky road that was enlarged in 1915 and which no one could have imagined how intensely it was to have been used by the French. Firstly, it had very fragile links to the interior: the railroad to Nancy was cut off at Mihiel by the Germans and that of Sainte-Menehould came under their artillery fire. On the other hand, it was difficult to defend. The fortified region of Verdun was a dangerous salient threat along his lines. In fact, Falkenhayn's reasons were military. In September 1914, the order had even been given to evacuate it. Moreover, Verdun was much less important than Reims for the French. But in the German headquarters, no one spoke of a blood-letting prior to the battle. Once the battle had gotten bogged down, Falkenhayn claimed he wanted to bleed the French white because the symbolic importance of this site would force them to defend it no matter what. The President of the Council Georges Clemenceau at Mort-Homme during a visit to the battlefield, September 1917. A political miscalculation due to his underestimating his opponents. He believed this would lead them to seek a separate peace. How could these people who do not have children continue the war? Hence the idea of inflicting a major defeat on them in an area where the British could not help them. He held the British army in great esteem but believed the French army was exhausted. But he wanted to get back to a war of movement. The Allies had failed to break through and their failures at Artois and Champagne persuaded Falkenhayn, the German commander in Chief, that a breakthrough was impossible. ![]() Antoine Prost: At the end of 1915, the war seemed to be stuck in a rut. ![]() Take CPR courses and consider getting CPR certified. Remove the Background with Magic Wand and Paintbrush Tool You may need to play with the slider to get the tool to work well on your particular image, but in general the Magic Wand is very good at what it does. Dragging the bar more to the right will increase the number of color shades selected, so will most probably include some areas of the foreground if above 75%. If the selection includes some areas of the foreground that you intend to retain in the image, drag the tolerance bar further to the left this effectively tells the magic wand to be a bit pickier about what it considers to be the same area of the image and it will select less. It highlights the area with an animated black and white dashed line. Now click an area of the image background to remove with the Magic Wand selector. Your cursor should become a Magic Wand selector as below. Click Tools, and select the Magic Wand option. Open the image file that contains the element that you want to preserve. The Magic Wand tool is an automatic selector that seems to work as if by magic (really it works by looking for sharp differences between areas of an image file).
